In 2021, the Municipality of Roosendaal started the development of the new HUIS van Roosendaal. The old building was in need of renovation, was dismantled in a circular way and rebuilt and furnished. With Gispen as a partner, it became a sustainable journey full of custom-made furniture for the office spaces.
Benoit Mommerency, account manager at Gispen, and Peter Hereijgers, team leader at the Municipality of Roosendaal, talk about the collaboration.

Circular philosophy, homely atmosphere

Sustainability played a major role in the project, as did a homely appearance. Peter emphasises: "The furniture is in line with our philosophy, with sustainable and reusable parts." For example, refurbished chairs from Herman Miller, with replaceable parts, give the furniture a longer lifespan. Because a homely atmosphere is just as important as circularity, the interior combines warm colours and comfortable elements. Think of sofas, hanging chairs and different seating arrangements. Train compartments have also been imitated with train benches from the JUNA collection. Peter: "This makes the building feel more like a living room, where colleagues and visitors feel at home."

Tailor-made

Flexible and hybrid workplaces were mainly designed for the design. Sit-stand desks from our TMNL collection including acoustic screens. Conference tables from the TEAM collection, and co-working spaces. Gispen made this furniture to measure, with rounded corners and special acoustic solutions, to dampen the sound in the open spaces. For specific teams, who work with large drawings, extra large desks were created. Political conference tables were given an oval shape and other tables a round shape.

Smart Building: Smart Building Technology

As icing on the cake, smart building technology has been incorporated into the new HUIS van Roosendaal. Every desk has a sensor. Zens' 'Puk' measures the occupancy of workplaces, serves as a wireless charger and provides insight into real-time workplace usage on dashboards. This way, employees can see where there is still a place available for them, and cleaning is more efficient by skipping unused workplaces. This saves costs and contributes to a positive work experience.

How do you like it?

Peter says: "The end result is fantastic. The HUIS van Roosendaal has a huge number of different workplaces, in combination with flexible spaces such as a meeting center and a covered roof terrace. Thanks to the variety of workplace types and the warm, inviting design, colleagues choose where and how they work: from brainstorming rooms to informal 'train compartments'."

This project shows how a municipal office evolved into a modern meeting place that inspires employees and visitors.

A word from the client

"We are proud of the circular approach of this project. We were able to give a new life to much of the old building. Including the furniture, with sustainable and reusable parts. This way you really feel that you are contributing to an environmentally conscious working environment.

The new HUIS van Roosendaal is warm, open and inspiring. The combination of variation in workplaces, smart technology and a homely look make it complete. The building is functional and invites collaboration and creativity."
